Before you can begin to mold young minds so they can become contributing members of society, you will need to consider the steps to becoming a teacher.

If you are interested in learning how to become a teacher, you should consider the requirements of the state where you intend to teach. The requirements to obtain a teaching certificate vary from state to state.

You will need to obtain your high school diploma and maintain an excellent grade point average. Since having a college degree is one of the first steps to becoming a teacher, you will need to have strong grades throughout high school so you can successfully apply to a college or university.

You may wish to volunteer for positions that allow you to work with children while you are in high school. Although this is not a requirement, it will help you determine which age groups of children you enjoy teaching.

Some ideas for volunteering include working with a boys’ or girls’ club, helping out with Special Olympics, volunteering as a tutor and even working as a summer camp counselor.

You will need to obtain your college degree. While many teachers pursue a degree in education, it is not mandatory to do so. It may make your path to becoming a teacher easier, however, if you do have a degree in education.

If you pursue an educational program designed to prepare you to teach, you will develop the skills and knowledge base needed to pass any state teaching examinations as well as successfully complete your student teaching requirements. Your college guidance counselor is one of the best assets to help you navigate through the decisions you need to make at this crucial stage.

You will need to complete the state requirements for student teaching, where you will develop real-life teaching skills in actual classroom settings. This is where you will begin to experience the benefits of being a teacher.

You should be prepared to go through a background check, which often includes fingerprinting. This is done to ensure that people entering the teaching field do not have anything in their background that makes it inappropriate for them to work with children.

Completing a teaching preparation program is often required; this ensures that all teachers within a particular state receive the same basic training. The National Council on Teacher Quality recently released its annual report rating the teaching prep courses offered throughout the United States.

For example, Furman University, in the state of South Carolina, received a high score of 3/4 stars for its elementary school preparation and 4/4 stars for its secondary school prep. The non-profit group evaluated 608 schools, basing their evaluation upon criteria such as entry requirements for teaching candidates, comparative strengths of the student teaching programs and the teaching curricula.
